Nicola Shannon

Counsellor & Psychotherapist

Nicola Shannon

Nicola works with adults and couples who may be at a crossroads, struggling to bring purpose, meaning, and authenticity to their lives and relationships. Her work often centres on feelings of disconnection, which can manifest as anxiety, burnout, procrastination, or compulsive and addictive behaviours around substances, spending, or technology.

Nicola’s extensive history working with individuals and families navigating addiction enables her to help clients understand how unhelpful behaviours take hold and how to build a resilient sense of self to prevent these patterns from recurring. She is well-versed in both abstinence and moderation-based approaches, supporting clients as they assess and evaluate their behaviours to choose a path forward that aligns with their values.

Her approach is tailored and integrative, combining practical, short-term strategies from CBT and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to manage immediate challenges, while also exploring deeper-rooted patterns using frameworks like IFS and Psychodynamic therapy. This allows clients to understand how the past shapes the present, uncovering the “why” behind difficult behaviours, and enabling lasting change. Nicola’s work focuses on helping clients develop compassionate self-awareness and the ability to set healthy boundaries, creating a vibrant, connected and meaningful life.

Currently, Nicola is completing her doctorate in Counselling Psychology, with research focusing on the role of mindful self-compassion in creating harmonious relationships with oneself and others.
